Enhancing Communication, Language, and Comprehension
Communication is at the heart of connection. For children, developing the ability to express themselves, understand others, and use language confidently is a key part of their overall growth and learning. Whether your child is learning their first words, developing conversational skills, or finding new ways to express thoughts and feelings, building communication happens best through play, relationships, and everyday experiences.
At Play & Grow Therapy, we support children’s communication and language development through Play Therapy, Early Skills Support, and our Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) sessions. Each approach is tailored to your child’s developmental stage, supporting communication in ways that feel natural, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.
Play Therapy provides a safe, expressive space where children can communicate through play — often long before they’re ready to do so with words. Through symbolic and imaginative play, children express feelings, share ideas, and practise social communication in a nurturing environment. The therapist responds attunedly to the child’s cues, helping them feel heard and understood.
Early Skills Support focuses on strengthening the building blocks of communication, including attention, listening, understanding instructions, and expressive language. Using play-based routines, visuals, and modelling, sessions may support speech development, comprehension, and non-verbal communication such as gestures, signs, or visual supports. Families are guided with simple, consistent strategies to encourage communication at home and in daily routines.
Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) extends communication skills into group and learning environments. Children practise following directions, asking for help, participating in group discussions, and understanding stories and classroom language. These experiences support confidence and readiness for the social and language demands of school.
