Developing independence is an important part of every child’s growth. Self-help skills — such as dressing, feeding, toileting, and managing personal belongings — build a child’s sense of confidence and capability. These everyday tasks also support emotional regulation, problem-solving, and self-esteem as children learn that “I can do it myself.”

At Play & Grow Therapy, we recognise that these skills develop at different times for every child. Through Play Therapy, Early Skills Support, and our Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) sessions, we help children strengthen their independence in ways that feel achievable, supportive, and fun.

Play Therapy creates a safe and encouraging space where children can practise decision-making, problem-solving, and self-control through play. As children take the lead in their play, they begin to build confidence in their own abilities and develop persistence when challenges arise — all essential foundations for independence in daily life.

Early Skills Support provides hands-on guidance for developing practical self-help skills, tailored to your child’s age and ability. Using play-based routines and visual supports, sessions may include working on dressing skills, mealtime independence, toileting routines, or organising personal items. Parents are supported with simple, consistent strategies to encourage independence at home.

Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) extends these skills into preparation for structured learning environments. Children learn to follow routines, care for their belongings, transition between activities, and seek help appropriately — building the self-management and confidence they’ll need to thrive at school.

Together, these approaches help children grow their independence step by step, fostering confidence, resilience, and a sense of pride in their abilities — both at home and in their learning environments.
