Social and Emotional Development
Social and emotional development is at the heart of how children connect, communicate, and learn about themselves and others. These skills begin forming from birth and continue to grow as children learn to recognise feelings, manage emotions, build friendships, and develop empathy and resilience.
At Play & Grow Therapy, we understand that every child develops these skills in their own way and at their own pace. Through Play Therapy, Early Skills Support, and our Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) sessions, we help children build strong social and emotional foundations in a warm, supportive environment.
Play Therapy provides a safe space for children to express their feelings, explore relationships, and develop a sense of self-confidence and emotional understanding. Guided by the principles of child-centred play, the therapist supports the child in making sense of big emotions, practising self-regulation, and learning how to navigate challenges in healthy ways.
Early Skills Support focuses on helping children develop everyday social abilities — such as turn-taking, sharing, problem-solving, and recognising emotions in themselves and others. These sessions may include structured play experiences, visual supports, and family strategies to help children generalise new skills at home and in their early learning environments.
Foundations for Learning (School Readiness) helps children build the confidence, focus, and emotional balance needed to participate successfully in a classroom setting. Through play-based routines and targeted skill-building, children learn to manage transitions, follow directions, engage in group play, and communicate their needs effectively. We work closely with families to set individual goals that support social confidence, emotional awareness, and readiness for the next step in their learning journey.
Together, these approaches nurture the whole child — emotionally, socially, and developmentally — helping them feel more connected, confident, and ready to thrive in their relationships and learning.
